In 1588 the great Spanish Armanda attacked England. The 131 ships of the Armanda first sailed from Spain up the English Channel. It was there they were spotted by watchers on England’s high coast. Almost immediately, eighty English ships, much smaller but faster, put forth to do battle.
In a short time they drove the Spanish fleet into a French harbor. Following this, they set a number of their own ships afire and caused them to drift among the anchored Armanda. Panic soon forced the Spanish to flee the harbor and take to the open channel, where the quick English ships did severe damage.
Following this battle, the remains of the Armanda fled northward. Weeks later they limped home, having lost sixty-three ships and great many men, while the English lost no ships in combat.
